The More Expensive Your Wedding, the Higher Your Divorce Risk

Does The Cost Of Your Wedding Put You At Risk?

Most people know that wedding planning is one of the most stressful activities that couples can undertake, often putting a great deal of pressure on them before the big day. Combine this with the possibility of cold feet and the potential issues are serious.

It turns out though, that even if you make it through the wedding day without a hitch, you could still face higher divorce risks simply based on how much money you dropped during the wedding.

Is There A Chance You’ll Get Divorced?

Whether the families came together to donate money or you raised it all yourself with your partner, there’s no doubt that it can be difficult to plan a big and expensive wedding. It’s common to feel exhausted after the fact. Research shows that costly weddings may come with an even bigger price tag — the chance of getting divorced down the road.

Previous studies looked at various factors linked to a couple’s wedding that may increase their chances of success, and a new project completed by Splendid Insights identified that those couples who spent greater than $30k on their wedding day were more concerned about impressing their guests than in choosing a wedding ceremony in line with their needs.

Financial Pressure Can  Lead To Divorce

This was compared with couples who spent less than $10,000. A 2004 academic study of marriages in the United States found that those who would spend more money were more likely to get divorced down the road. The average American couple will spend more than $25,000 on their wedding in full. With so many different unique aspects to plan for, this can put financial pressure on people who are just getting ready to merge their finances.

Contemplating Divorce

Whether your issues are related to the wedding you had, financial concerns, or simply growing apart, it is beneficial to schedule a consultation with an experienced divorce lawyer if you find yourself in need of guidance after electing to move forward with a divorce. It is never easy to realize that a divorce is impending, but the support of an experienced attorney is beneficial.

It was recommended to me that I get in touch with Mary Katherine through an acquaintance who works in the field. I can confidently say it was one of the best decisions I had made. I went through a complicated separation process and custody battle over my two year old son; my case was extremely challenging and before I retained the services of Mary Katherine it seemed as though all was lost. Mary Katherine and Eoin O' Mahony worked tirelessly on my case and managed to guarantee my access to my son and reach an agreement that protected my relationship with him and secured my status as his father. They did so with the utmost of professionalism, compassion, and generosity. I truly cannot recommend her warmly enough.
